Just 'TWEEN You & Me

I'm exhibiting avoidance behavior. I am the mother of two "tweens" and I just blew off what I heard was a very informative workshop in my town about handling the adolescent stage. The truth is that I don't know if I can face what's in store. For example, here's an actual excerpt from the description of the event: "Person X will help explain why once well-behaved children become disrespectful and full of attitude, leaving parents feeling angry, frustrated and helpless." Sign me up for that. It's like if there were a hurricane coming and you were invited to watch a video of a house being sucked into the ocean. No thanks.

I'm just trying to tread water for the time being, holding my 11-year-old off for a little while longer until she beats me down for a cell phone. Did you know she is the only one her age, on the entire planet, without her own email, her own cell phone and a platinum American Express card? If any of you have any advice of the magic age that kids should have cell phones, leave a COMMENT (you don't have to have a google account). I'd love to hear from other parents in the same...sinking ship.

I know it's not the right thing to do, but I think I'll bury my head in the sand for a few more months. Then comes the fifth grade 'talk'...oh boy.

By the way, did you see the national headlines that Clay Aiken has "revealed" he's gay? In the grips of a banking crisis, major economic downturn and a horrific war, I sure will sleep better knowing Clay's come out of the closet.

    Hi Sue,
I to prefer to keep my head in the sand for as long as possible! My kids do not have cell phones, credit cards or email either! You are not alone! So far, there have been no requests for any of the above mentioned, but I am sure it won't be long before I am faced with such decision. I think, unless your kids are riding bikes or walking to and from school, it is not necessary for them to have cell phones. I hope to wait until they are driving but not sure how realistic that will be.. As far as email goes, they can use mine! And credit cards... never!! Well, I guess once they are educated and employed it will be ok to get one! Well, I hope I have helped!

The only reason why I am tempted to get my children (ages 11, 9. 8 and 5) cells phones is I figure with the four of them having them, that may be the only way I learn how to 1: text, 2: listen to my messages, 3: change my ringtone and outgoing message.......
